Al Williamson: Rest In Peace.

I've just learned that Al Williamson, a former teacher of mine at the Joe Kubert School, passed away. He is one of the greatest comic book artists ever. I looked up to him as an art influence since my teenage years. Four of us students had the great opportunity to visit his home and studio one year. He will be missed. This is another very sad day, first Frazetta died in early May and now Al Williamson. I am feeling very sad.

Parallaxium Graphic Story / Comic - Now Available

Parallaxium is a "first person" graphic story wherein the reader experiences the story through the eyes and mind of the main character. The main character is a research volunteer who's strange visions during testing entangle the character between this universe and a bizarre medieval-like universe.

The 32 page book features a dual story track. On the first read through, the viewer can read the main character's thoughts. On the second read through, the viewer can read the researcher's notes which give a different perspective and analysis of the research volunteer's visions. The notes are presented as icons near the bottom of the pages and are hidden until the reader hovers over or clicks on them. Available at www.bernalmedia.com

A modified Langston Hughes poem for artists

I was reading the Wikipedia entry for Langston Hughes and found his poem "The Negro Artist and the Racial Mountain". This poem struck a cord in me in regards to being an artist trying to express my creative vision. I reread the poem to myself in a modified form. In a form meant to inspire an artist's creativity despite what critics and the common man may think of the artist's work.

Here is that slightly modified version based on and in all due respect to Langston Hughes and his poem "The Negro Artist and the Racial Mountain":

The Artist and the Mountain

Artists intend to express
their individual creations without fear or shame.
If people are pleased we are glad. If they are not,
it doesn't matter. We know our creations are beautiful. And ugly, too.
The tom-tom cries, and the tom-tom laughs. If artists
are pleased we are glad. If they are not, their displeasure
doesn't matter either. We build our temples for tomorrow,

I just received my giclée prints from Finerworks! Here is the 16"x20" "Dream of Venetia" print displayed on my glass kitchen table. I'm using glasses to hold it flat because it came rolled in a tube. I placed a Pepsi can next to it so you can gauge the size of the print.

Here is the same print covered with heavy books and my One Strange Way convention poster. I'm confident that my print flattening process will work because Krigstein, McCay, Gilbert Hernandez, and I have it covered! ;)

Here is my 8"x10" "Dream of Edia" print on the kitchen counter top. Both prints have been printed on archival matte paper. I'm happy to say that each print has retained all of my fine line detail work.

Here are Hopey and Maggie laughing away as they flatten the princess! This is Jaime Hernandez's "Love & Rockets" hardcover book. Gilbert Hernandez's hardcover book is called "Palomar" and can be seen in the second picture above.

The unsigned prints are available on "Archival Matte Paper" and "Satin Luster Paper" for those who like a slightly more shiny finish. Finerworks did a very nice printing job. :)

WIP - Termian Horseman Stage 05 Final

This is the final version of the horseman illustration. I adjusted the outline and interior fill values throughout the rider and horse. I completed the sky pattern, made some adjustments to it, and added a black hole sun with two minor space entites to either side.

I decided not to have other figures in the background since the story's description for this scene is focused on the horseman. The ground plain scratchiness and the dust particles being kicked up into the air add fury and chaos to the scene.

I have invoked inversion! :)

Yes, it was time to invert the image. This image is a part of the same world as my royalty and deity images so I had to invert it before I became to attached to the black line on white background version.

As you can see, I've begun filling in the patterns and textures of various objects.

I'm still doing some minor tweaking of various parts of the image. A major change is the size of the horse's head. I asked my brother if anything seemed wrong to him. He called out the over sized horse's head and I had to agree. I believe it is now at a more exceptable size.

I should mention that the texture's and pattern's values are not set yet. I will adjust these later. Currently I'm just trying to figure out what textures and patterns to use for each part of the drawing. I also have to start working on the background elements.

Here is a close up of how I start "stage 02". I begin to refine the sketch on a layer above the original sketch layer. I've lowered the opacity of the original sketch so that it appears lighter and my new black sketch lines are easily seen on top. In this stage I'm starting to add mid level details and am adjusting the initial object's shapes.

It is time for another work in progress (WIP). This time I'm drawing a horseman. This is the initial rough sketch I started last night. The illustration is far from finished and just represents the general layout and elements in the picture. Click on the picture for a larger view.

I've suggested some figures in the background but I'm not sure what they will eventually look like. I just placed them there to see how they would effect the layout. They do seem to add a bit of tension to the scene and hint at the speed of the horse as it charges by. At some point I will determine who these characters are and what they will look like.

I've also started creating a sky pattern. Patterns can be tedious to make so I tend to draw them when I'm thinking over the main elements of the picture.

It should be noted that at some point I will invert the image just like my royalty and deity illustrations. This usually happens when the initial drawing is finalized and I start concentrating on the patterns and values of the image.

Termian Art - Princess Detail

Here is a detail of the Princess illustration. I changed a few thinks from the original post. I made one branch(horn) on her head a little different from the other, I removed two of the creature's eyes, and removed the creatures lower jaw. The cat-like creature does have a jaw but it is smaller and should not have been visible at this angle. I considered moving the dotted lines around her mouth outward so they wouldn't look so much like wrinkles but I like the form the lines make. It reflects the curves of her form, the drapery, and the windowsill.

At that time it was for the cover of a story but now it represents nothing in particular... just a color test. I'll probably revisit this image in the future when my eyes are new to it again. Lost Princess Found

Now that the nice long holiday weekend is over... Here's a drawing I just completed. I originally set out to draw a somewhat normal looking female but the drawing turned into more of a muscle structure sketch of a very athletic woman. It looked nice but when I got home I decided to scan the pencil drawing into the computer, clean it up in Photoshop, and make her look less like an athlete and back into what I originally intended. She is in a sense... a lost princess found.

Once Upon a Time in 3D

Originally I considered creating One Strange Way in 3D. Here are two 3D concepts I made at that time of the kids and their environment. The kids were supposed to have a bizarre kind of look to them that was influenced by the art of Mark Ryden. and the house was supposed to look like a stage set/dollhouse.

In fact the whole title was more of a game at the time. It was similar in game play to Telltale's Sam and Max Freelance Police but with out the puzzles impeding your progress so much and allowing the viewer to simply watch the story.

Earlier this month Bernal Media had a booth at the Chicago Comic Convention... it was a bit of a let down. Very few of the people walking through our area were there to check out comics. The booth was located between some retired wrestling stars, some lesser known celebrities, and the Suicide Girls. While the location was amusing, most of the crowd that came our way were more intent on becoming the new best friend of Lou Ferrigno (The Hulk), Todd Bridges (Willis on Different Strokes), and Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca of Star Wars).

One thing that really made the comic convention feel more like a "B movie/tv star" convention was that Marvel, DC, Image, and Dark Horse didn't attend... yep a comic book convention without comic book companies. Ok, there were a few, most notably Ape Entertainment and Avatar.

Whew! It's been awhile but I finally did a first pass of color to the street scene. Now its time for a bunch of tweaks accross the board. The taxi doesn't have any shading on it at all and I have to start dropping some more shadows in. I'll be shading here, highlighting there, adding texture, and special effects.

Ink Drawing - Deity Primitus

Here is another strange page I drew around 1986 or 1987. I like the deity quite a bit but the other character looks like a Simpson. The funny thing is that this was drawn before The Simpson's TV show. I think Matt Goening and I may have been on the same frequency at that time. I painted the illustration below around the same time as the page above. Its characters also look like Simpson characters. (Note that the painting is dated "87")

At the time, I would ask people to guess what the character in the painting was saying. I'd then tell them that he was saying "I bet they are wondering what I'm saying."
Nowadays I should probably tell people that he is saying "We aren't Simpson characters." :)

I'm sad to say that I don't particularly like this painting anymore. I like the idea and the composition but the painting isn't done very well and the similarity to the Simpsons bothers me. I think I'm going to make a modern version of this painting very soon.

Oh, and one more thing about the inked page above.... Yes that is a nose hair mustache! 8D

Here is a bonus picture for today. This is an ink wash illustration I made during my school days at the Kubert School. We were supposed to make a funny single panel cartoon in the style of a certain artist whose name I don't remember. He probably drew for New Yorker magazine at least that is what this style reminds me of. If anybody (kubies?) knows the name of the artist this style represents let me know.

Comic Page - Tylis Page 01

Here's an inked comic page I drew probably about 18 years ago. I remember being really happy about the quality of this page. The composition, the line weights, the flow of the page as well as the layout within each panel, everything seemed to come together really well. Heck even the panel borders were decorative with abstract expressionist corners.

I was really being influenced by a wide range of fine art at this time. Klee, Kandinsky, Klimt, Schiele, Miro, Picasso, Giacometti to name a few. I'd often visit with them at the Art Institute of Chicago Museum.

Its unfortunate that despite how good I felt about this page, I didn't continue and create more pages for this story. Someday I'll have to post some pages that really show my fine art influences.

The characters were named out of respect for some old friends of mine. Below is a detail from panel 1.

I started drawing a short story I recently wrote. Here is a rough sketch of one of the panels. It's a street scene where one character is leading another to a waiting taxi. I drew this image in about 8 minutes roughly trying to figure out the general layout and what elements should bein the scene. The next image will be much more refined. Ink Drawing - Angel

I really had a strong desire to draw this image, a 3/4 decorative portrait. Over time it manifested itself into an angel. As I was drawing background and all those dots, I thought to myself "This must be kind of how a tattoo artist must feel" inching along dropping ink.

I really like making decorative patterns and textures. For the most part, I don't just draw them haphazardly. I try to find a nice balance between the design patterns and the overall composition. I say for the most part because once I know the general layout of the design I allow for imperfections as I ink the design. I like it to appear more organic then perfect. - Pencil on bristol vellum 8"x 10"

I wanted to do another female figure study so here it is. I didn't know what creature to add in the background for awhile. Then I saw the Pixar trailer for "UP" and liked the dodo bird type creature. This is a profile portrait of a blind sentry I drew today. His helmet consists of some kind of implanted lizard head. The helmet keeps the visual system of the dead lizard functioning. It interprets and transmits the lizard's superior sight information into the sentry's brain. The helmet bypasses its host's own visual faculties - Ink on bristol vellum 8.5"x 10"

This is the first ink drawing I've done in awhile. I inked over the pencil sketch using a Faber Castell artist pen/brush. I bought it at an art supply store called Dick Blick. I enjoyed working with this pen/brush since I didn't have to worry about knocking over an ink bottle. ;) I guess the down side is it has limited range when varying the line width. This is a motion comic I recently completed. I drew it for an assignment some 24 years ago at the Joe Kubert School. The assignment was to draw a three page story where in three characters were either very big or very small in a human environment. The reader wouldn't find out where the characters were until the last panel. 25 years ago I would never have thought that I would convert these pages into a motion comic.

One Strange Way

I created an interactive comic called One Strange Way. It contains interactive word puzzles and picture puzzles. As well as clickable side stories, voice audio, and background music.

Here's a drawing I did in Photoshop of a female Elf Caster. After having drawn in pencil a few times I decided to see if it improved my drawing on the computer. What improved the most was my focus and my patience in drawing the image to the best of my abilities.

This was the last of my "Tex Lot" drawings. I decided to go back to my roots of fantasy art with these drawings. It had been a really long time since I've drawn in this style probably not since my Bungie Software days. I also haven't really drawn on paper since the 90's... Yeessh! This is actually the first drawing of the "Tex Lot" series. It kind of expresses how I felt after the first day in the office brushing the cobwebs off my 3d Max modeling skills. While I was in Texas doing some contract work I decided to get back to drawing in pencil instead of exclusively drawing in Photoshop. It felt great to get back to putting pencil to paper.
